My hand trembled slightly as I held the Colt snub nosed, waist high
and a pretty girl in my sights.
The girl was barely out of her teens, Dark Haired 18-20 maybe and had
that trashy bad girl look about her. Cut offs, exposed midriff and a pert
young body. Oh and did I mention she had broken into my house and was there
knife in hand.
She looked defiant and scared "you going to shoot me?" as she stood
in my upstairs office.
"Do I have to? Drop the knife hon."
The knife fell to her feet.. She snuffled "Look I'm sorry, I used the
knife to cut your screens, I needed the cash."
"Drug habit eh" The eh comes naturally to me. I was born on Toronto
though I am a American now.
She shook her head "My friend is pretty sick, she needs some dope to
get her through", I think the adrenaline was wearing off. She was looking
scared 'I don't have anywhere to go" Trying for sympathy plea. Being a
defense attorney that usually works on me.
Spot choice, The state I live in would give the kid 10 years for a
burglary. Did I want to send her up the river for that long?" I decided.
No. I still couldn't let her go and do this stupid stuff again. Some redneck
might just shoot her sorry self.
"Go sit on the sofa please" I have an old sofa upstairs, a good thing
to.
She sat. Legs together. Demure.
"That must be a pretty good friend for you to risk jail time for her.
Whats your name."
"Lisa's my best friend in the world.' She snuffled and I handed her
a tissue "my name is Amy"
"Ok Amy, You are looking at a residential burglary with a weapons enhancement.
That a mandatory 10 years"
She started to cry.
"Relax, I have an idea. I am defense attorney by trade so I think I
can help you out."
She looked up . A look of hope
I have a couple of questions for you."
Amy nodded
"How old are you."
"18"
"Do you have ID on you?"
She nodded again and reached into her pocket.
"Slowly" I took the ID. Yep she was 18
“Ok Amy now what do we do about you?"
I really was at an impasse. There was no way I could trust the little
street rat. I didn't want her in jail .On the other hand I didn't want
her living under a bridge either. Than I had it.
"Stay in the chair please"
She didn't move. A good sign for what I had in mind
I had some handcuffs, a waist belt and a set of leg irons stashed in
a box. The things were a gift from a cop client of mine. I just hadn't
gotten around to getting rid of them. Anyway at least until today I wasn't
really kinky.
"here is my deal. You can stay here to you get your life together.
You'll do household chores and so on. No sex is required. You can stay,
free of charge until you get a useful job skill. Your friend can go into
residential treatment. I know a program that can help her . Here is the
catch. I don't trust you so...' I waved the cuffs. You have to wear these
at all times when you are here."
She swallowed and was about to protest.
"Because I am decent guy even if you say no. I'll forget you had that
knife. You'll probably do 2 to 4 on the burglary rap."
"Can't you just let me go"
"And have you do something stupid like this again? Look the next guy
might just shoot you. Anyway, If you get caught you get a really long prison
term. Besides like you said, where do you have to go?"
She was really quiet. Caught between a rock and a hard place she was
staring at my various diplomas on the " I love me wall" deciding, If I
stay with you you'll help Lisa
I nodded. "I'll help you too."
She sighed. "No sex?"
"Not without your full consent. Saying no won't change anything. "
She looked at the cuffs again, looked at me. made a snap decision.
In a flat voice she said simply "I accept."
"Great. Lets go help your friend Lisa." I play a lot of Texas Hold
Em so I have a pretty good poker face but inside I was so excited I could
just burst and so confused I could just puke. I honestly had know idea
why I thought doing something like this was a good idea. I needed a slave
girl like I need a bunion.
"I don't want you running away, Wok?. " She nodded
I put the leg cuffs on over her socks and tightened them. Click click
click, than the double lock. I shivered. What was I doing/
"Can we go?"
"Are you hungry"
Amy nodded. She wasn't much of a talker
"We will get take out on the way. What do you like."
"Mexican"
She shuffled out,a little awkward.
We stopped for tacos. she was silent the whole trip, probably as worried
and I was weirded out. About the only talking I manged was to call in a
few favors and get Lisa a bed. I keep my promises.
I was glad to have my little .38 with me as we traveled into no mans
land looking for Lisa. I am tougher than I look and with Amy there the
thugs stayed mostly away.
We found the squat and entered its dismla confines. Lisa was huddled
under a blanket shaking and sick. I popped the cuffs off and gave Amy a
couple of hundred. I didn't like it but I sent her to go buy dope for her
friend. I gave Lisa a cleaning kit for her needles. “Hurry Amykins” Lisa
whispered.
Amy came back and I turned away as pretty blond Lisa shot herself full
of heroin.
Lisa gave me that stupid addicts smile
"You ready?"
Amy had piled up what little stuff the girls had. "Lisa."
Lisa had a sweet voice "Yes Amykins"
"I am taking you to rehab and get you cleaned up"
Lisa was in nowhere land. I think we could have taken her anywhere
It was a bit of trouble, what with Amy leg ironed up, for us to get
her into my car but we managed. I guess my vestigial conscience was screaming
at me so I told Amy "When your friend gets clean she can live with me a
while, same terms, if you haven't got your own place."
Amy cried a river when we dropped her friend off. I offered my shoulder
and she took it. Once the tears stopped she smiled faintly "Thanks for
helping Lisa."
"Its Ok." My conscience must have been working over time because I
blurted "Look you can go free. I'll forget the whole thing." I scrounged
for some money
Amy though a moment "I'll stay if thats alright.”I was very happy and
must have bubbled as I said “Sure Amy.” I guess I wasn't going to
be lonely anymore.
